Sep 03, 2012 I have now released a new tool for archiving in Outlook Mac 2011 which is a native Mac Application. It is significantly more stable, featured and faster than the AppleScript. It also supports archiving mail to the cloud (such as a GMail account) which keeps your archive safely backed up and accessible/searchable anywhere in the world. Oct 09, 2012 I've written an auto-archive AppleScript for Outlook Mac 2011 to emulate what is available in Outlook Windows. It archives mail and calendar events. After configuring a few parameters in the script you can run it manually to test it or using Outlook for Mac scheduling.

Problem
When you try to set up Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 to use the archive mailbox feature in Exchange Online for Office 365, your attempt fails.
Workaround
To work around this behavior, use Outlook Web App for mail, and apply retention policies in Exchange Online. Use the following settings when you apply the retention policies:

Whereas Outlook for Mac 2011 doesn't support the archive feature, Outlook 2016 for Mac does support the archive feature. When you use Outlook 2016 for Mac, you can access your archive and move mail items into your archive.

You can create an archive mailbox for a user's primary cloud-based mailbox. Users can use the archive mailbox (also known as a personal archive) to store historical messaging data by moving or copying messages from their primary mailbox to their archive mailbox. The archived messages reside in the cloud, and users can access the messages by using Outlook 2016 for Mac, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010 or Outlook Web App.

In the past I have exported or dropped and dragged messages from Entourage, then deleted the message from my mail. You can also drag them back in if you need.

I would set up a folder in my email, move all the messages I want to archive into this folder, then create a folder on my hard drive and drag the email folder into it. This will copy all the emails into the hard drive folder and then delete the folder from Outlook. I would image you can use the export feature to accomplish a similar thing.
