Grammarly is getting an add-in for Microsoft Word’s Mac app, as well as for Microsoft Word online. It means Mac and Word online users will be able to get spelling, grammar, and other suggestions. Download Grammarly for Microsoft Word on Mac or Windows and write better, clearer documents.
By default, Word uses red wavy underlines to indicate spelling errors and green wavy underlines to indicate grammatical errors as you type. If those underlines bother you, you can turn off automatic spelling and grammar checking.
To turn off spelling and grammar checking, choose Word→Preferences and click the Spelling and Grammar icon. In the Grammar and Spelling preference pane, deselect the Check Spelling As You Type or Check Grammar As You Type check box to turn off automatic spelling or grammar checking.
Point at any preference item in the Spelling and Grammar preference pane to see its description.
If you don’t want to use the automatic spelling or grammar checkers, you can still check the spelling and grammar in a document by choosing Tools→Spelling and Grammar. Word looks through the entire document and displays a dialog when it finds a possible spelling or grammar error.
You don’t have to turn off the wavy red or green underlines to use this dialog. If you prefer, you can just ignore the wavy underlines and choose Tools→Spelling and Grammar whenever you want to check a document’s spelling or grammar.

This article describes how to customize the color of the spelling and grammar checker underlines in Microsoft Word 2007 and later. These underlines indicate the following items:
- Spelling errors
- Grammar errors
- Contextual spelling errors
- Smart tags

To change the color of the wavy underline that indicates spelling errors, follow these steps:
Grammar Check Word Mac
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftShared ToolsProofing Tools
If the SpellingWavyUnderlineColor entry exists, go to step 6.
If the SpellingWavyUnderlineColor entry does not exist, go to step 4.
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
In the right pane, type SpellingWavyUnderlineColor. This is the name of the new entry.
In the right pane, double-click SpellingWavyUnderlineColor.
In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Hexadecimal.
In the Value data box, type the hexadecimal number that represents the color that you want to use, and then click OK.
Repeat steps 3 to 8 to change the underline color for other proofing tools. Use the registry entry that corresponds to the underline color of the proofing tool that you want to change instead of the SpellingWavyUnderlineColor registry entry, as follows:
- To change the color of the wavy underline that indicates grammar errors, use the GrammarWavyUnderlineColor registry entry.
- To change the color of the wavy underline that indicates contextual spelling errors, use the ContextualSpellingWavyUnderlineColor registry entry.
- To change the color of the dotted underline that indicates smart tags, use the SmartTagUnderlineColor registry entry.
Exit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
The registry uses eight-digit hexadecimal values to define colors. The values for some common colors are indicated in the following table.
