You can verify that an email you sent is delivered or read by requesting a delivery or read receipt in the Microsoft Outlook 2019 or 2016 email client. Just follow these steps.

2020-3-19  Why is it Read Receipt feature not available in Outlook 2016 for Mac. I have Office 365 subscription and using an IMAP account, but this feature is missing. In Windows Outlook you have this feature working for all accounts POP3/IMAP/Exchange. Read receipts and delivery notifications are available in only some versions of Outlook for Mac, and only when using an Office 365 work or school account, or an Exchange Server account managed. 2020-4-5  The option to request read and/or delivery receipts is on the compose mail Options ribbon and Draft menu. If you are not familiar with receipts (because Outlook for Mac did not support it), receipts are notification that the message was received or read. Delivery receipt: send a notification mail when the email has been delivered to the mailbox.

Request Receipts when Sending Single Message

This option will send a request for a read receipt with a single message that is sent from your Outlook client.

  1. While writing your message, select the “Options” tab.
  2. Under the “Tracking” section, select the check box for one or both of the following:
    • Request a delivery receipt for this message
    • Request a read receipt for this message

Request Receipts on All Sent Messages by Default

These settings will control whether or not receipts are sent from your Outlook client when you send an email message.

  1. From the main Outlook screen, select “File” > “Options“.
  2. Choose “Mail” in the left pane.
  3. Scroll down to the “Tracking” section.
  4. Select the “Delivery receipt confirming the message was delivered to the recipient’s e-mail server” and/or “Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message” as desired.

Now when you send the message, you will receive a receipt if the email is read or delivered.

You can tell Outlook what action to take on email when the sender sends you a request for a read receipt with these steps.

  1. From the main Outlook screen, select “File” > “Options“.
  2. Choose “Mail” in the left pane.
  3. Scroll down to the “Tracking” section.
  4. Choose a selection under “For any message received that includes a read receipt request“.

Please note however that delivery and read receipts can be turned off by the recipient or email server administrator on the recipient end. This is not a fool-proof way to verify if email was received or delivered. It is handy in most cases though.
